With the most advanced software such as Ansys and CADEM, the mechanical engineering department is meant mainly for R & D activities. The students get hands-on experience programming and operation, which enables the students to undertake challenging research-oriented projects.
Heat Transfer being one of the important subjects which is commonly applied in renewable energy, industrial, commercial and domestic systems, the HMT Lab is mainly concerned about the use, conversion and exchange of thermal energy. The laboratory involves experiments on various conductive, convective, radiative, boiling and condensing mechanisms of heat transfer. The lab has critical infrastructure that includes major equipment like Forced Convection Apparatus, Pin Fin Apparatus, Free/Natural Convection Apparatus, Parallel Flow and Counter Flow heat exchangers, Thermal Conductivity Apparatus, Stefan Boltzmann Apparatus, Emissivity Apparatus, Vapour Compression Refrigeration Apparatus, Air Conditioning Apparatus and Transient Heat Conduction Apparatus.
The Fluid mechanics and machinery lab’s main objective is to demonstrate practically the concepts of Fluid mechanics and Turbo machines. This course will provide a basic understanding of flow measurements using various types of flow measuring devices, calibration and losses associated with these devices, including analysis, understanding and applications of hydraulic turbines and pumps. This laboratory consists of flow measuring devices like Orifice meter, Venturimeter, Nozzle meter, V-notch and power-absorbing machines like centrifugal pump, reciprocating pump, and blower. The major equipment include Pelton turbine, Francis turbine and Kaplan turbine.
The objective of the modernised MMM lab is to introduce mechanical students to the measuring equipment and to teach them calibration techniques of different metrological instruments. The lab consists of equipment such as slip gauges, calibration equipment for pressure gauge, load cell, thermocouple & strain gauge, drill & lathe tool dynamometers, toolmakers’ microscope, and floating carriage micro meter.
In the ECE laboratory, the students understand the working principle of different engines through the cut-section demonstrations. The properties of different fuels like flash and fire point, viscosity, and calorific value are tested using standard test rigs. The engine performance characteristics of two and four stroke petrol and diesel engines are found using different dynamometers like rope brake dynamometer, water brake dynamometer.
Foundry & Forging Lab is one of the basic and important labs in the mechanical department, which includes three groups of experiments, including Sand testing, foundry practice, and forging practice.
Sand Testing Section: includes compression, shear and tensile tests on a universal sand-testing machine.
Foundry Practice Section: includes the preparation of mould cavities, using foundry sand. The foundry section also involves testing the moulding sand properties such as grain fitness, moisture content, and mould hardness, with the help of relevant well-equipped tools.
Forging Practice Section: includes an LPG Hearth furnace, forging tools and other equipment. Calculation of raw material requirements for different models preparation of minimum three forged models involving Up-setting , drawing and bending operations.
The objective of the Design Lab is to impart practical knowledge on design & analysis of the mechanisms in machine tools. The Design lab demonstrates the concepts related to mechanical vibrations, governors, balancing of rotating masses, journal bearings, photo elasticity, strain gauges etc. This lab is useful mainly for research related to vibrations, experimental stress analysis and stress concentration factors.
The Workshop & Machine Shop Lab is dedicated to have a hands-on on the subjects learnt in the theory classes. The workshop contains a spectrum of equipment and technology ranging from simple hand tools, measuring equipment, milling machines, shapers, grinding machines, radial drilling machines, pillar drilling machine and power hacksaw machines & Lathes. The Workshop & Machine Shop Laboratory can be accessed by students and teachers from all the disciplines of engineering.
